Prof. Dr. Kemal Reha KAVAS

Prof.Dr., Akdeniz University Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture  

Kavas received his B.Arch (2002) and M.Arch (2005) degrees from the Department of Architecture at METU (Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Türkiye) and his Ph.D. degree in History of Architecture from METU in 2009. His Ph.D. thesis entitled “Environmental Aesthetics of the Rural Architectural Tradition in the Mediterranean Highlander Settlement: the Case Study of Ürünlü” and completed under the supervision of Prof.Dr. Jale Erzen won the 2009 “METU Thesis of the Year Award” by Prof. Dr. Mustafa N. Parlar Association for Education and Research.

Kavas currently works as a professor at Akdeniz University where he has been a faculty member since 2009. His major research interests include theory and historiography of architecture, architectural design, architectural education, environmental aesthetics, vernacular architecture, cultural heritage and freehand drawing. In this framework, he has authored numerable national and international lectures and publications such as scientific articles, conference proceedings, books and book chapters. He made significant contributions to education in undergraduate and graduate programs at Akdeniz University. He has taught in architectural design studios and several theoretical courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs, and he also supervised M.Arch and Ph.D. theses.

Besides his academic work, Kavas carried out important administrative duties in the founding staff of the Department of Architecture and the Faculty of Architecture. He is the founding Chair of the program of Architectural History where he works in the same position. He also served as Vice Dean of the Faculties of Fine Arts (2012-2015) and Architecture (2015-2020). As a faculty member he had important contributions to the relations between academy and professional practice. In this framework he served as the Vice President of the Chamber of Architects of Türkiye Antalya Branch between 2016 and 2020. In this position, he contributed to many organizations including IABA (International Antalya Architecture Biennales).

He had been the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture between 2020 and 2023, also a member of the Board of Directors of the Faculty of Architecture Deans Council between 2021 and 2023. He is currently the Vice President of the Cultural Heritage Working Group of Antalya City Council where he represents Akdeniz University.
