Prof. Dr. Celal Abdi Güzer received his bachelor’s degree from the Middle East Technical University in 1982. Güzer completed his master’s and doctoral studies at the same university and conducted doctoral research on Architectural Criticism at Newcastle upon Tyne University in the UK, where he also taught courses. He is still teaching courses on architectural criticism at the Middle East Technical University and leading one of the groups in the 4th-year architectural design studio.
He has numerous national and international publications on contemporary architectural concepts and practices with a focus on theory, criticism, and design. He has held various administrative positions at METU and was also the chairperson of the Architects’ Association 1927. Güzer has been a jury member in several architectural competitions and has received many awards and mentions in national and international competitions, including three first prizes.
He realizes most of his projects through Middle East Technical University and has numerous completed and ongoing urban and architectural projects, including the Middle East Technical University MATPUM Research Center, which received the YEM (The Building Information Center) Design Award in 2008.
In 2013, he curated the International Architecture Biennale of Antalya and organized the main exhibition themed “Template.” In recognition of his contribution to the architectural field, a special award was given to Güzer by the award program of the Turkish Architects Association of Practicing Architects in 2019. In 2024, Güzer also curated the international exhibition “The Journey of the Line.”
Güzer’s publications and research topics include architectural criticism, educational buildings, contemporary architectural practices and concepts, housing and mass housing, urban transformation, and sustainability.
